Ferret

Ferret

A ferret is a domesticated, furry mammal that many people keep as a pet. The male is usually larger than the female.

About Ferret

A Ferret is a mammal in the same family as the badger, the wolverine and the weasel. The male ferret is generally larger than the female with an average length of 20 inches with a white or darker colored fur. Ferrets weigh between 1-5lbs and have an average lifespan of 7 to 10 years. The ferret is thought to have been domesticated by the Egyptians over 2500 years ago to catch rats and mice. Since then the ferret has become a common household pet.

Female ferrets have two to three litters per year. The young ferret will be independent by three months and reach maturity as early as six months. On average, they sleep fourteen to eighteen hours a day, in two to six hour cycles. While awake they are very active, and will seek exercise and to satisfy an abundant amount of curiosity.

Ferrets are regulated around the world and were once banned in the United States. The majority of these laws were repealed in the 1980’s-1990’s when they started to become popular family pets. It is still illegal in the state of California to own a ferret under the Fish and Game Code Section 2118. Many cities and military bases also have banned ferret ownership and some require special permits.
