FIFA stands for the Federation Internationale de Football Association, which is responsible for governing the international sport of soccer, commonly referred to as football in countries other than the United States.

About FIFA

FIFA, Federation Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football), is the governing body of association football, or soccer in the US. The FIFA headquarters are located in Zurich, Switzerland. FIFA was created in Paris, France on May 21, 1904. FIFA expanded outside of Europe when it added South Africa in 1908, Argentina and Chile in 1912, and Canada and the US in 1913.

FIFA is responsible for the organization and governance of soccer's major international tournaments. The most notable of those tournaments is the FIFA World Cup, held every four years since 1930.
