First Pregnancy

First Pregnancy

The first pregnancy can be an exciting time but can also bring fear and worry. Proper steps should be taken during a first pregnancy; and a woman should be under constant care of a doctor, as in each pregnancy.

About First Pregnancy

When pregnant for the first time, it's important to learn as much as you can as quickly as possible. Go to a bookstore or a library and find a good book on pregnancy prenatal care. It is fascinating to follow the changes in your body and correlate them with the changes your baby goes through as it develops from a tiny embryo to a baby ready t come into the world. Some tips:

• Be ready to eat a healthy, balanced diet, with plenty of vitamins and minerals. Your doctor will probably put you on special vitamins for pregnant women.
• Drink plenty of water.
• Continue to get exercise; this will help you be in better shape when you give birth. Childbirth is not an easy process, even in modern times, so good physical health is essential.
• Try to get a 'support network' around you, not only for now, but for when you have the baby. Your husband, significant other, or girlfriend network, and especially your family, will be really important to getting you through the coming months.

A woman’s first pregnancy can be both exciting and scary to her. She is often overwhelmed with joy at the prospect of her baby but also nervous about what changes the pregnancy will bring. Woman often rely on family, friends, her obstetrics team and books to be prepared and understand what she can expect during the pregnancy and how to handle any situation that arises.

The first stage a woman will go through is the process of determining if in fact she is pregnant. The first sign is a missed period. After the first missed period she can take a pregnancy test. She may use a urine test that can be found at a store or visit a doctor to have a blood test performed. Other signs of pregnancy include breast tenderness, nausea, fatigue and mood swings.

One of the most anticipated milestones in a first pregnancy is when she begins to show. Often, a woman experiencing pregnancy for the first time will not begin to see her belly increase in size until around the third month of pregnancy. At this time the uterus has grown large enough to push up over the pelvic bone.

Even more exciting is when you can hear the baby's heartbeat and when the baby begins to move. It seems like a miracle!

Another anticipated milestone is the beginning of labor. It marks the end of pregnancy and the beginning of a new life. Many woman often worry about when it will begin, how will she know it is time and how will she handle it. In a first pregnancy labor often last between 10 and 20 hours. Signs of labor beginning include contractions, bloody show from loss of mucus plug and a gush of fluid caused by the membranes rupturing. Not all signs must occur for labor to begin. Just as every pregnancy is different, every labor is different as well.

In the end the first time mother is greeted by the greatest gift of her life, her first child. The worries and anticipations of pregnancy are over. In its place come all the new worries and anticipations of being a first time parent!
