About Flight

The kite was the first step towards man-made flying objects, dating back to 200 BC in China. During the 15th Century, Leonardo Da Vinci had many aspirations of flight through multiple designs which never were constructed. As the 17th and 18th centuries rolled around, the discovery of gases such as hydrogen led to the invention of the hydrogen balloon.

During this same time period, physicists discovered modern aerodynamics. Experimentation with gliders inevitably led to the framework needed to build an aircraft, which combined with 20th Century strides in aerodynamics and engines contributed to the first possibility of a powered flight.
