Football

American football, known in the United States simply as football and often as gridiron outside the United States, is a competitive team sport. The objective of the game is to score points by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone.

About Football

Football, or internationally known as American Football, is a competitive team sport where two teams of 11 must advance an oblong shaped ball into the other team's end zone by either running or passing the ball. Each time a team enters the other's end zone 6 points is awarded. After that, the extra point play is given to the scoring team where they opt to run or pass the ball in to the end zone for 2 points or they can kick the ball through and upright goal for 1 point. If a team is not close enough to score a 'touchdown' (getting into the other team's end zone) they can either punt the ball to the other team, or kick a field goal for 3 points.

In America, kids can start playing organized football from elementary school through community 'Bantam' or 'Pop Warner' leagues. Most middle schools and high schools sponsor their own football teams. High school kids can be recruited into collegiate programs and some colleges even offer walk-on roles or open tryouts for their football teams. After college, players can declare themselves for the NFL Draft, which is the primary means of going to the professional level. It is rare that an NFL team offers walk-on roles, open tryouts, or selects undrafted players.
