Ford came through the worst year in its history in 2008, with a loss of $14.6 billion loss. However, the company had not taken government help during the recession as its competitors had, and had enough liquidity to make it through. Ford Motor Company weathered one of the worst recessions in history and emerged on the other side free of government debt and with an innovative positioning that places it among the developers of new green technology for the automobile.

A new push for innovation that had started before the recession helped it weather the storm also. In 2009 it reported a $2.7 billion profit, its first full-year profit in four years.

Ford plans to make a variety of electric propulsion options available on all of its top-selling cars worldwide.

Ford plans to make all of its leading brands available both in electric, plug-in hybrid, or gas-powered efficient. This will help them survive in what will be a turbulent market as autos move beyond the internal combustion engine.
