Four Horsemen

Four Horsemen

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse appear in the Book of Revelation, in the Bible. They are said to represent war, famine, death, and conquest.

About Four Horsemen

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are representations of conquest, war, famine, and death. They are first mentioned in the last book of the New Testament of the Bible, the Book of Revelation of Saint John the Evangelist at 6:1-8. In this book it is said that Jesus Christ holds a scroll that has 7 seals. When Jesus Christ opens the first four seals he releases The Four Horseman.

The first Horseman is said to be riding a white horse. His representation is up for debate by scholars; he is looked at as either evil or righteous. He is best known as conquest and also the bearer of pestilence. The Bible states that he is a conqueror bent on conquest.

The second Horseman is said to be red and represents war. The Bible verse states he was given the power to take peace from the Earth and to make men slay each other.

The third Horseman is said to represent famine and he rides a black horse. He is carrying a scale.

The fourth horseman represents death. He is riding a pale horse. The Bible states, Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

('Pale Horse, Pale Rider' is the title of a collection of three short novels by American author Katherine Anne Porter. Many literary and theatrical works are named after entities named in the Book of Revalation.)

Even though the Four Horsemen were released to destroy the Earth, it is believed that they act according to God’s will, not on their own.
