French Open Tennis

French Open Tennis

The French Open is one of the major tennis tournaments of the year. It is held in late May/early June in Paris, and runs about two weeks. It is held at the Roland Garros stadium, and is the second of the tournaments that make up the 'Grand Slam'. It is the tennis event with the largest international audience, the only Grand Slam event still held on a clay court, and is considered one of the world's most physically demanding tennis tournaments.

About French Open Tennis

The French Open began in 1891 and was originally only open to French players. In 1925 it was opened up to players from all nations and in 1968 it became the first of the major tournaments to allow amateurs as well as professional tennis players to enter. As of 2007, the French Open announced that it would provide equal prize money to both male and female champions.

The French Open is the only major Tennis tournament that uses a clay-surfaced court, as opposed to grass or a hard surface. The clay surface serves to slow down the ball on a bounce, and as a result players who dominate the sport with a high-speed serve are slightly handicapped. Several of the greatest tennis players in history were unable to win the French Open because of this.

The 2010 French Open is broadcast on NBC, ESPN, Tennis Channel, and TV5 and runs from May 23rd to June 6.
