Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th is a day that can strike fear into the heart of people all over, even though it is just a date on the calendar. To many it is a day that brings bad luck and misfortune and nothing should be attempted on such a Friday.

About Friday the 13th

The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia, frigga meaning Friday and triskaidekaphobia being the fear of the number 13.

Both Friday and the number thirteen have been associated with bad luck. Jesus is said to have died on the cross on Friday the 13th, Eve tempted Adam with the apple, the Temple of Solomon toppled and Noah is said to have set sail on the day. Friday can be bad, especially one that falls on the 13th.

And the number 13 always seems to be associated with bad luck. In Italy, the lottery omits the number 13; globally, airlines skip the thirteenth row; in the United States, buildings generally do not have a thirteenth floor.

For a long time the number twelve had been considered the number of totality, as reflected in the twelve months of the year, twelve signs of the zodiac, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, twelve gods of Olympus, twelve inches in a foot etc., whereas the number thirteen was considered irregular. There is also a superstition, thought by some to derive from the Last Supper or a Norse myth, that having thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one of the diners.

Whatever the case, people all over seem to feel that Friday the 13th is a bad day for doing anything. But we all know that it is just a silly superstition, right?
