Gabourey Sidibe is an American actress best known for her roles in 'Precious' and 'The Big C.' Gabourey grew up in Brooklyn and Harlem, New York after her parents divorced. She never intended to go into acting for a career, but became an Oscar nominated actress for 'Precious.'

Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe was born in the Bedford Stuyvesant community in Brooklyn, New York. Her mother is a former special ed teacher who gave up her career to become a street performer and her father is a cab driver. Her parents divorced when she was a child, and grew up in Harlem. Gabby attended Mercy college and although she was cast in a few plays, she had no intention of acting as a career. She enjoyed the security that a desk job and a college education provided. That was until a friend told her about an audition and convinced her to try out for the role of Claireece 'Precious' Jones. Her depiction of the soaring spirit of the lead character in Precious has won the admiration of millions.
