The Gap is a clothing store that offers clothing for men, women, children and babies along with accessories and personal care products. It started in 1969 by Doris and Don Fisher in San Francisco. Today Gap Inc. is one of the largest specialty retailers in the world. Gap has over 3,100 stores worldwide and five different major apparel brands: Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Piperlime and Athleta.

When Don and Doris Fisher opened up Gap in 1969, their reasoning behind the store was plain and simple: Don couldn't find a pair of jeans that fit. Now, over 40 years later, the company has grown into a business that reaches customers in over 80 countries.

The Gap brand includes Gap, GapKids, babyGap and GapBody. Gap Factory Outlet opened its first store in August of 1994. Gap outlet stores include Gap Outlet, Gap Generation and Banana Republic Factory Stores.

Gap stores can be found worldwide across the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, China, France, Ireland, Japan and Italy. The first Gap store to open up outside of the United States was in the UK in 1987.
