GED

GED

A GED (general education development test) is used to issue students who didn't graduate high school an opportunity to earn a high school degree.

About GED

In the 40’s returning soldiers from World War II found it difficult to enter the workforce as many of them had left school before graduating to serve in the war. In response to this growing problem the United States Armed Forces Institute requested that the American Council on Education develop a series of tests that would give those soldiers who passed the credentials to obtain a job.

The General Education Development test (GED) is comprised of 5 separate tests; Language, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts and Mathematics. In most areas a person must score a 410 on each individual test to earn the GED. The maximum score of each test is 800. If one fails a test they need not take all 5 tests again. Only retesting of the subject failed is necessary. The test is taken in an Official GED Testing Facility in person. GED testing is not offered online in order to limit the possibility of cheating.

Most government agencies and schools view the passing of the GED test equivalent to a high school diploma. The military however views a GED as a lesser entity. They limit the number of GED holders entry into the Armed Forces as studies have shown that the failure rate to complete their first military term is doubled than that of those who have obtained their high school diplomas.
