About General Hospital

First aired on April 1, 1963, 'General Hospital' is set in the fictional town of Port Charles, New York following nurses, doctors, and their relationships in and out of the hospital.

In the 1980s, 'General Hospital' was the #1 rated soap opera in America. In 1981, the so-called supercouple Luke and Laura brought over 30 million viewers to watch their wedding on television. To this day, it is the most watched episode in soap opera history.

General Hospital, where would its fans be without it? For over 47 years General Hospital has been broadcast daily into our homes pulling us into the lives of so many characters. We have seen death, love, mystery, murder, accidents, mafia wars, and so much more. Characters have died only to rise again when you least expect it. The sometimes outrageous plots pull us deeper into its web with every episode.

General Hospital began April 1, 1963. It is the longest running Soap Opera in history that is still in production. It is even in the Guinness Book of World Records for this feat. It began on ABC and still airs on ABC. It is the third longest running television drama next to 'As the World Turns' and 'Guiding Light'. It has produced over 12,150 episodes with many more to come. Since 1977, General Hospital has aired in the 3 pm Eastern timeslot giving us 60 minutes drama per day.

The two most memorable characters General Hospital are Luke and Laura, portrayed by Anthony Geary and Genie Francis. In 1981 their wedding reached over 30 million viewers making it the highest rated hour in soap opera history.
