Get Fired

Get Fired

Getting fired or being laid off can be devastating to your ego and to your finances. If you have been fired for cause, be sure to learn from the experience so that you can present a positive outlook to another prospective employer. If you have been laid off, don't let it get you down; start networking now!

About Get Fired

Getting fired is different from being laid off. Most people view getting fired as being discharged from your job 'for cause'. That is, you did something that was not in your job description, or didn't do something that was required by your job. It's important to understand the job requirements before you accept a position. If you are fired 'for cause' it's important to understand why you were fired so that you can learn from the experience.

Getting laid off, or losing your job because your position is being eliminated or your employer's business is doing poorly, is also pretty devastating, especially when you weren’t expecting it. But, if you get laid off think of it as a positive change. You will now have the opportunity to try something new. You may even end up with a better job or career.

If you have lost your job, be sure to get right back on your feet and start looking as soon as possible. Update your resume, stay positive and start networking again. Let your friends and acquaintances know you are back on the market. When interviewing for a new job be sure to mention why you were let go from your other job and let them know that you have benefited from this experience. Don’t dwell on the topic of getting fired or laid off, just get it out there and keep it brief and honest.

If you were fired check your local state unemployment office to see if you can collect unemployment benefits. Also, think about the reasons you were fired; was it wrongful termination? Certain circumstances may enable you to fight your termination legally.
