Global Warming

Global Warming

Global warming is the warming of the planet caused by human activity, including burning fossil fuels and cutting down forests. Carbon emissions are known to cause the planet to heat up, and the burning of fossil fuels creates carbon emissions as a byproduct.

About Global Warming

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near-surface atmosphere and oceans and its projected continuation. Although most use the term global warming to refer to climate change caused by human activity, it can also refer to warming from volcanic eruptions and solar radiation.

Researchers have found that surface temperature around the globe increased during the 20th century. Scientists have concluded that rising temperatures were very likely caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases resulting from human activity such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation.

An increase in global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation. Other likely effects include changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, species extinctions, and changes in agricultural yields.

Debate continues regarding global warming, its causes and what can be done about it. One step that has been taken is the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by most governments. The Protocol's purpose is to compel nations to take steps to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

Some expected changes resulting from climate change are the following:

1) The increase in global temperatures is expected to raise sea level and change levels of participation

2) The evaporation of the oceans will cause more precipitation, including greater snowfalls in the winter in the northern climes, and greater than normal rainfall, causing floods, as has recently been seen in Pakistan (2010).

3) Forests, crop yields and supplies of water for human use will be affected by climate change.

4) More frequent and stronger hurricanes and tornadoes are expected to occur.

5) Deserts are expected to expand, and some National Parks will be affected.

6) Glaciers will melt and some of the most immense glaciers, in the Himalayas, for example, will diminish. The Asian glaciers are the water source for billions of people in China and India. The melting of these glaciers is already occurring.
