GNC

GNC

GNC is the largest global specialty retailer of nutritional products, including vitamin, mineral, herbal and other specialty supplements and sports nutrition, diet and energy products. GNC has headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA and has more than 4,800 stores in the United States.

About GNC

GNC began in 1935 when David Shakarian opened a health food store called Lackzoom in Pittsburgh. As he found success with these stores offering natural foods and better nuttirions, more stores opened in the Pittsburgh area, and eventually in other states. As Shakarian expanded outside of Pittsburgh, he adopted the name General Nutrition Centers for his chain. As the GNC chain began to grow, it started producing its own vitamin and mineral supplements, foods, beverages and cosmetics. By the early 1980's, GNC had over 1,000 locations and still continues to grow today.

GNC works to offer an in-store experience for customers that includes stocked shelves and knowledgeable sales associates. The sales associates must go through ongoing training programs through GNC University, which is an e-learning program for expanding sales associates' knowledge in the areas of fitness and nutrition.
