God

God

God is a divine being that many people believe is real. People who believe in God are called theists. People who do not believe in God are called atheists. Many people are not sure about God's existence, and they are known as agnostics.

About God

God is a title reserved for divine beings, often treated in monotheistic religions as a proper name, and the object of worship in religions. To distinguish the monotheistic Western religions (i.e. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), 'God', capital 'g', refers to the sole deity of worship. In polytheistic religions (i.e. Hinduism, Shinto, particular forms of Buddhism, and ancient Greek, Norse, and Egyptian mythologies, etc.), 'god', lowercase 'g', refers to a single deity who is accompanied by other divine beings in a pantheon of gods.

Conceptions of God:

In Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, God is an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-good, and eternal being who is present everywhere, and is the divine creator and sustainer of the universe. Commonly addressed with a capitalized third person male pronoun, He is in some cases also considered a spiritual and bodiless being, a being which personally relates with His creation, who hears and answers petitionary prayers, who grants believers heavenly salvation, and who reveals Himself to humanity through written scriptures and miraculous and personal experience. In the Christian tradition, God is conceived of as a trinity of three divine persons, composed of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, the second person being Jesus.

The Existence of God:
The problem of determining whether or not God exists is one of the oldest and most ancient issues to concern humanity. Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and other modern and ancient religious philosophers and theologians have attempted to prove the existence of God throughout history by pointing to the appearance of complexity and design in the universe and biology, the necessary existence of a divine being for moral guidance, among other proofs. On the other hand, there are arguments against the existence of God, or at least one which is all-good.

These include arguments based on the fact that God has not clearly revealed Himself to the world, and the problem of a God of any sort allowing evil to exist, etc. Ultimately, these are either helpful arguments one way or another, or they muddle the issue. So, there are three camps into which people fall on the issue of the existence of God: theists believe God exists, atheists that God does not exist, and agnostics do not know or are undecided whether there is a God or not.
