Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto

Rockstar's 'Grand Theft Auto' released in 1997 and later became the series that changed sandbox gaming forever. Often the subject of criticism and the target of a string of lawsuits because of its controversial content, it is one of the best known series of games in the world. Throughout the whole series the player does what is needed to get where they need to go, and that usually involves stealing, killing, and running from the cops.

About Grand Theft Auto

It all started with a top down shooter where the idea is to do what ever you want. Set in London, the character did odd jobs for crime bosses. GTA 2 was more of the same, but the PC version had a crude version of multiplayer. Though they were decent games, the GTA series had yet to show up on the radar of most gamers.

The series really got noticed when Grand Theft Auto went from its top down view to full 3D. 'GTA 3' brought a new engine and a new setting in Liberty City, a New York knockoff. Rockstar decided to use the same game engine and try to squeeze every last drop out of it in 'Vice City' and 'San Andreas.' Set in a pseudo 80's version of Miami, 'Vice City' lets the player enact a Scarface-like experience. 'San Andreas' was by far the largest of the 'GTA 3' trilogy, as it spans the size of three cities in what seems to be 90's Los Angeles. Rockstar got in PR trouble with this one because if a player hacked the game and played a certain way, they would enter into a sex mini game. This damaged Rockstar's reputation, but after some apologies and the passage of time, people were eager for something new from Rockstar.

Rockstar answered with one of the most detailed and jaw-dropping games ever made in 'GTA 4'. With crisp new graphics, a new physics engine, and a cell phone for the player, GTA brought the series into the 21st century and gave the game a better since of realism. Set in present day Liberty City, players enter an engrossing and detailed world with many hours of gameplay.

Rockstar's downloadable content adds around 20 hours to the game that centers around people you've briefly met in the story. Originally an Xbox 360 exclusive, GTA 4's DLC later released for the PS3 and PC as well. 'GTA 4: Episodes from Liberty City' contains two stories: 'The Lost and Damned' and 'The Ballad of Gay Tony'. In 'The Lost and Damned' the player is part of a motorcycle gang. In 'The Ballad of Gay Tony' the player is Tony's assistant and right hand man.

Gamers are anxiously awaiting the fifth entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, but little information has been revealed on the game so far. GTA V is in the works and is expected to release sometime in 2012.
