Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is an American and Canadian holiday celebrated on February 2nd of each year. Traditionally, Groundhog Day is the day when we find out whether there will be an early Spring or not, based on a groundhog's shadow!

About Groundhog Day

The holiday's origin goes back to ancient European folklore where, before weathermen or meteorologists, people would ask a bear or a badger or some special little furry creature if the winter would be long or short.

In Modern times the holiday revolves around a badger and its shadow: if the badger comes out of his hole and it is sunny and it sees its shadow, that means that there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If the badger comes out and does not see its shadow that means winter will end soon and spring is on its way.

The holiday in the US famously follows a little furry badger in Punxsutawney,Pennsylvania, named Punxsutawny Phil. Punxsutawny was used as a background for the film, 'Groundhog Day' starring Bill Murray.
