Hades

Hades

Hades, in Greek mythology, was the God of the underworld. His name also became the name of the underworld, or Hell.

About Hades

Hades is the son of Kronos and Rhea. He is god of the underworld. He inherited this position when he and his brothers divided creation. His brother Zeus took the Earth, his brother Poseidon chose the sea leaving Hades the underworld.

Hades rules the underworld with a stern hand. Once you enter you can not leave. However few have managed to do just that, like Heracles and Odysseus. Hades is rich from the wealth of precious metals found in the Earth. Hades pet, Cerberus, a three headed hound, guards the gates of hell.

Hades wife is Persephone. Hades was so taken with her that he captured her and dragged her to the underworld to be his wife. Her mother Demeter was so heart broken she caused the Earth to bear no fruit causing famine.

Zeus sent Hermes to ask Hades to release Persephone, he agreed only after tricking her into eating a cursed pomegranate seed forever binding her to him. Persephone now comes above ground for 2/3 of the year when her mother blesses the Earth with sweet rain and breezes. The other 1/3 Persephone returns to Hades and Demeter makes the Earth cold and harsh.
