About Haiti Earthquake

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck January 12, 2010, and was centered just 16 miles from the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. Different reports put the death toll between 92,000 and 316,000, and between 1 million and 1.8 million made homeless. The Presidential Palace, the National Assembly Building, and much of the countries infrastructure were destroyed in the quake.

Because of the extent of the damage, the 50+ aftershocks that continued the devastation, and the general political unrest that has been part of the countries legacy, it was very difficult for other nations to send aid to Haiti.

A report issued in July 2010 suggested that up to 98% of the rubble from the quake has yet to be cleaned up, with possibly thousands of bodies buried in the rubble. 1.6 million people still live in tent housing with no electricity, clean water, or sewage.

On the one-year anniversary of the quake in 2011, it was estimated that 5% of the rubble had been cleared. A combination of government inaction and broken promises of aid from other nations means the Haitian recovery may be measured in decades rather than years.
