About Hammer of Thor (Marvel)

Thor's Hammer (Mjolnir), in the Marvel universe, is a fictional weapon that appears in publications from Marvel Comics. The weapon first appears in Journey into Mystery #83 (Aug. 1962) and was created by writer Stan Lee and artists Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott. Mjolnir resembles a large short-handled hammer and is the favored weapon of the Thunder God Thor. The object is based on Mjöllnir, the weapon of the mythical Norse god of the same name.

In the Marvel world, Mjolnir is made of the fictional Asgardian metal Uru, which has a stone-like appearance. The side of the hammer carries the inscription: Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor. It is said that only a few in the universe can lift the Hammer. Some who have been able to wield the Hammer include Odin, Magni, Superman, Wonder Woman and Conan.

Thor's Hammer has many powers both offensive and defensive. Described as impacting with enough force to destroy mountains it can creating vortices and forcefields, control weather, shoot blasts of lighting and other energy, it can also destroy undead with a touch. Defensively, the Hammer can absorb energy, detect illusions and depict images of far away places among many other powers mentioned in the comics.

Mjolnir by itself is depicted in a post-credits scene in 'Iron Man 2'. Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) is seen looking into a giant crater in the New Mexico desert and informs Nick Fury: Sir, we've found it. In the final camera pull-back, the hammer is shown standing head-down in the center of the crater. The scene trails the forthcoming film, 'Thor', due for release in May 2011.
