About Hamster

Hamsters are on the surprisingly short list of adorable rodents. They make great pets for children and are easy to care for. They are inexpensive and do not eat much. Just like with every animal, exercise is important, and hamsters love to run! So, having a wheel in the cage is a good idea. Buying them in pairs isn’t necessary, or really recommended. They are actually happiest when alone.

There are five types of hamsters: Syrian Hamsters, Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamsters, Dwarf Campbells' Russian Hamsters, Roborovski Hamsters and Chinese Hamsters. The most common hamster to find at the pet store is the Syrian Hamster. Almost all Syrian Hamsters are descended from a group of hamsters brought to the USA in 1930 by Professor Aharoni of the University of Jerusalem.

Syrian hamsters, are only tolerate each other during mating and the rearing of offspring. Even after six weeks the babies will begin to fight, and will need to be separated. Hamsters are very tame, and you can even train them to come to your hand so you can play with them. They can also live up to three years.
