From 1894 to 1898 Hawaii was governed by the Republic of Hawaii. The Republic rule ended on July 4, 1894 with the Newlands Resolution where the Republic was annexed to the US becoming the Territory of Hawai?i on July 7, 1898. Hawaii was officially admitted to the union on August 21, 1959 becoming the 50th US state. The total land area of Hawaii is 10,931 sq miles ranked #43 in the United States.
