About Hebrew

Hebrew is a Semitic language. It is from the Canaanite group. It is the earliest language of Jews, however by 586 BC Aramaic was being spoken more frequently. Hebrew was mostly used for religious writings and functions by 72 AD.

In the mid 19th century the revival of Hebrew as an everyday language was underway. This revival was lead by Eliezer Ben Yehuda (1858-1922). He spoke Hebrew in his home and encouraged others to do the same and also pushed for it to be used in schools.

Today Hebrew is again an official language of Israel along with Arabic. There are around 5 million people speaking it in Israel and some 3 Million more elsewhere. Learning Hebrew can be quite a task. But understanding it can be quite easy because most of the words are derived from 3 letter root words. Check out Hebrew Language: Root Words.
