Homecoming

Homecoming

School is back in session, so it's time to welcome back the students with a fun gathering! Homecoming traditions date back to 1911 and specific festivities will vary by school, but it's mostly focused about the students and alumni having an enjoyable time and rooting for the home team, at the beginning of the school year.

About Homecoming

Most high schools and other higher education institutions have a social gathering for their students and alumni called homecoming, which helps promote student relationships and an all around good time during the beginning of the school year. But where did these traditions originate?

Several sources cite that the original homecoming concept dates back to 1911 when the University of Missouri invited alumni and current students to attend one of their football game. Although the homecoming has evolved throughout the years, it still retains the original intent that the University of Michigan had, which was students supporting their school.

One of the most common traditions is the homecoming court, which includes a king, queen, and even prince and princess. In this practice, students will select their court who usually receive sashes or crowns to signify their role in the party. There has been some controversy around the selection of the court as some students feel that it's simply a popularity contest, which usually results in the popular kids earning the sashes.

In most schools, homecoming occurs at some point during the first two months of the new school year, which would usually fall either in September or October. For schools that have a football program, homecoming could even fall on the first home game of the season, which is the reasoning behind the name.

All-in-all, homecoming should be an enjoyable time for both you and your friends! Show your school some support and offer to help out during the set-up or clean-up of this event! You never know, it could earn you some points with the teachers!
