About Hookah Bar

Hookah bars, also known as hookah lounges and shisha bars, are businesses where flavored tobacco (shisha) is smoked, cooled, and filtered through a water pipe called a hookah. Originally from India, then the Middle East, hookah has risen in popularity in North America and Europe significantly over the last decade.

Hookah bars typically serve drinks and refreshments besides offering hookah alone. In many cases, hookah bars began as coffee shops which later added hookah as it became popular in the US. A normal hookah session lasts for 40 minutes or more.

Hookah has been called both a much worse alternative and a healthier alternative to cigarettes. 2010 studies of the health effects of hookah versus cigarettes by the World Health Organization and the American Cancer Society have shown that an hour of smoking hookah amounts to inhaling 100 to 200 times as much smoke and 70 times more nicotine than cigarettes.
