Hugh Hefner

Hugh Hefner

Hugh Hefner, born Hugh Marston Hefner on April 9, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, is the originator of the Playboy publishing empire and the Playboy ethos. Hefner began his empire when the world was still uptight about sex and he positioned himself as a liberator of sexual freedom through Playboy and the Playboy way of life.

About Hugh Hefner

Known for: Founder of Playboy Enterprises and (some say) the luckiest man in the world.

Despite his age he is always seen flanked by some of the most beautiful women on the globe. Hefner is the founder of Playboy Enterprises a company which produces both film and magazine products featuring nude women.

Hugh Marston Hefner was born in 1926 to teachers Glenn and Grace Hefner. Hefner completed high school after which he joined the Army, becoming a writer for an Army paper. He served for two years and then attended college at the University of Illinois earning a Bachelor’s degree in psychology in an impressive two and a half year time frame.

After college Hefner held various jobs in literary fields. He worked as a cartoonist, a copywriter and a circulation manager before his dreams of owning his own magazine were finally realized. After raising funds from friends and family Hugh Hefner launched the first issue of Playboy Magazine which featured Marilyn Monroe. This first issue sold $50,000 worth of copies, sealing the success of the venture and launching what was to become Playboy Enterprises.

Following his early success, Hef, as he is affectionately known, took his enterprise and philosophy to the top. Playboy brand has a strong foothold in the entertainment industry with its magazine, films, television shows, casinos, merchandise and stores. The Playboy Mansion, where Hef resides with his many girlfriends, is a hotspot for parties, attracting numerous celebrities for events held there year round.

On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2010, Hefner, 85, proposed to Playboy model and musician Crystal Harris, 25. After accepting his proposal, Hefner tweeted, ''After the movie tonight, Crystal & I exchanged gifts. I gave Crystal a ring. A truly memorable Christmas Eve.'' Hefner added, ''When I gave Crystal the ring, she burst into tears. This is the happiest Christmas weekend in memory.'' However, just five days before their June wedding date on which they were supposed to walk down the aisle together, Hefner and Harris canceled their wedding plans. Hefner tweeted briefly, ''The wedding is off. Crystal has had a change of heart.'' As a result, an E! TV special covering the marriage was canceled, wedding expenses came due without a wedding, and a Playboy special issue became immediately outdated. Issues of Playboy which featured ''Mrs. Crystal Hefner'' on the cover and a full story inside had already been printed and readied for shipping, so a large, red sticker proclaiming ''RUNAWAY BRIDE IN THIS ISSUE!'' were affixed to covers.

After the apparently surprising breakup, Hefner said he does not plan to get married again.
