Humane Society

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest animal protection organization. They work to improve the lives of all animals by advocating for better laws; investigating animal cruelty?; encouraging corporations to adopt animal-friendly policies; conducting disaster relief and animal rescue; and providing direct care for thousands of animals at sanctuaries, emergency shelters, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and mobile veterinary clinics.

About Humane Society

The first SPCA in the United States was the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh in New York. A 2005 statistic stated The Oregon Humane Society adopts the highest percentage of animals in the U.S. nationally, 96 percent for dogs and 80 percent for cats. National humane societies like the ASPCA provide support for local branches through funding and training of animal care.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the largest advocacy group in the world reporting assets of $160 million in 2009. The HSUS operates animal sanctuaries in five states and provides assistance for other sanctuaries and shelters. The group aims to target factory farming, animal fighting, fur trading, puppy mills, and wildlife abuse.

Humane societies also provide services such as vaccination, micro-chipping, and spay/neuter clinics. The group’s goal is to keep pets in a healthy environment and provide behavioral advice to pet owners to be sure they can provide this type of environment.
