Hunting

Hunting

Hunting is the practice of tracking and killing an animal for food, sport or trade. It used to be something people needed to do to provide meat for their families. These days hunting is much more of a recreational activity and a way for people to get back to their primordial roots. The practice of hunting for trade has ultimately lead to more trouble than its worth with the extinction of countless species of animal. However in terms of population control, hunting has become a very effective tool in maintaining a healthy population of wildlife.

About Hunting

Hunting in North America predates the United States by thousands of years. Pre-Columbian Native American peoples relied on hunting to survive. They used to meat for protein, the bone to make tools and weapons, the hides to make clothing and shelter, sinew to make bow strings, etc.

Today many Native American peoples retain hunting rights and are exempt from some state and federal laws, such as Inuit and Eskimo communities are exempt from the Marine Mammal Protection Act which allows for the hunting of walrus, seals and wales for food, fuel and clothing.

For the rest of us, hunting regulations vary from state to state. Regulations include hunting seasons, how many can be harvested, what methods and techniques may be used to harvest said animals and what kind of animals can be harvested. Some animals are under protection from environmental laws and require licenses to hunt. Vermin and varmints are typically not protected, unless the species is endangered.
