About Hypotenuse

A Hypotenuse is the longest side of a right-angled triangle. This is the side that is opposite of the right angle. The length of the hypotenuse is found by using the Pythagorean theorem.

Why is it called a Hypotenuse?
Hypotenuse is derived from the Greek hypoteinousa. This is a combination of hypo- (under) and teinein (to stretch).

How to Calculate the Hypotenuse
Finding the length of the Hypotenuse is easy as utilizing the Pythagorean theorem. This theorem states that the square of the length of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides.

Example: One side has a length of 4ft (16ft squared). The other side has a length of 3ft (9ft squared). The total length adds up to 25 square feet. The hypotenuse length is the square root of the total length of 25, which is 5ft.

Major General Stanley in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta The Pirates of Penzance impressed the pirates with his knowledge of the hypotenuse in The Major General's Song as follows: I am the very model of a modern Major-General, I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral, I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical, From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical; I'm very well acquainted too with matters mathematical, I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical, About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news-- With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.
