Identical Triplets

Identical Triplets

Identical triplets are very rare, and the odds of this occurring range between one in 60,000 and one in 200 million. Identical triplets would mean that a single egg would split into three identical and separate embryos.

About Identical Triplets

Identical triplets sometimes begin as quadruplet twins but one embryo dissolves or vanishes. VTS or Vanishing Twin Syndrome is more common than people actually realize. Some specialists believe that VTS occurs in 1 out of every 8 pregnancies. The cause is not really known but apparently the twin is aborted naturally early in pregnancy and is absorbed so it appears to have vanished.

Identical twins are very common and can happen to anyone. Twins are not hereditary, they do not run in a family. Why an egg splits is actually unknown and is referred to as a malfunction of normal development.
