IKEA is a Swedish home goods company, famous for stylish modern furniture, low prices, and some assembly being required on said stylish, low-priced home goods. IKEA stores are usually two levels, with the top floor housing the showroom and the restaurant, while the lower level houses the warehouse and check-out counters. The showroom is designed so the shopper has to walk through the whole thing, making notes about what they want to get when they get to the warehouse level to find what they want for the second time before proceeding to the check-out.

By switching to ''flat pack'' boxes, they are able to cut down on materials and transportation costs, as each truck can now care a lot more product. They are working towards having the entire company run on renewable energy, and at 48 percent, they are doing better than most. They have developed new types of particle board, new materials for manufacturing in general, do not use child labor, donate solar lamps to folks in third world countries without electricity, use recycled materials where ever possible, organic food, etc.. IKEA is actually an acronym for Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. Ingvar Kamprad is the name of the gentleman who founded IKEA, he lived on a farm called Elmtaryd near a small village in southern Sweden called Agunnaryd, get it? IKEA?

Ingvar founded IKEA in 1943, at the age of 17 after his father gave him some money for getting good grades. Ingvar sold wallets, table runners, nylon stockings, pens, watches, picture frames and jewelry at discounted rates. By 1948, Ingvar expanded into the world of furniture, made from wood close to Elmtaryd and by local manufacturers.

By the 1980s IKEA had spread out and franchised all over Europe and had begun to venture into the US. They began to see responsibility to its consumers and the environment as part of a good business plan. By the 2000, IKEA had grown to be a world wide seller and manufacturer of home goods, with a mission of leaving the world in a better place than they found it, with stylish, sustainable furniture and a belly full of Swedish meatballs and lingonberry jam.
