The word illegal means, actions forbidden by law. Laws define what is and is not legal. An illegal action comes with reprimands, fines, jail time or,in serious cases, death to deter a behavior or action.

About Illegal

There are many different types of laws in the United States. Federal, state and local laws may have different goals, impacts or interpretations. For example, an act passed in 1984 by the Senate required states to raise the legal consumption age from 18 to 21. South Dakota resisted this protest and received a 10% penalty in it their transportation budget. Despite taking the matter to the Supreme Court, the Court upheld the law. In this instance, the federal and state laws clashed. However, the federal law superseded the state law.

While laws are created by politicians, the interpretation of the laws is left to the judicial and law enforcement systems. Therefore it is possible for a law to be interpreted differently than the original intent.
