Indiana is a state located in the Midwestern United States bordered by Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois. Indiana has a humid continental climate with cool winters and warm summers. The extreme southern portion of Indiana has a humid subtropical climate and receives more precipitation than other parts of the state. Temperatures in the winter average around 30°F/15°F and 84°F/64°F in the summer.

French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle was the first European to cross into the area now known as Indiana. He entered present day South Bend at the Saint Joseph River in 1679. Indiana joined the Northwest Territory in 1787. Corydon became the second capital of the Indiana Territory on In December 1813. In 1815 a petition for statehood was approved by the territorial general assembly. Indiana was admitted into the union on December 11, 1816 as the 19th state with a total land area of 36,418 sq miles.

The capital city of Indiana is Indianapolis and is also the largest city in the state. Indiana is also known as the Hoosier State. The state bird is the Cardinal, the state flower is the Peony, and the state tree is the Tulip tree. The state motto of Indiana is The Crossroads of America. The motto comes from Indianapolis, which is the hub for several major Interstate highways that criss-cross the state. This intersection connects Hoosiers to the rest of the United States.
