IQ Score

IQ Score

IQ score is the score arrived at after taking an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test. People with IQs of 120 and above are considered 'Superior-Very Superior' in intellect. Newer methods of testing make the term 'quotient' inaccurate, but the term has survived regardless.

About IQ Score

The IQ test was developed in 1904 by French psychologist Alfred Binet. He was commissioned by the French government to find away to test children so that intellectually normal children would be separated from other children, who’s intellect was inferior and would then be placed in the appropriate schools.

The Binet Scale or Simon-Binet Scale consisted of a test that would have children follow commands, copy patterns, name objects and put things in order. This test was referred to as the intelligence quotient thus giving it the name IQ Test.

The IQ score is determined in this way: The IQ is the ratio of mental age to chronological age, with 100 being average. So, an 8 year old who passes the 10-year-old’s test would have an IQ of 10/8 x 100, or 125. (Source: learninginfo.org)

Descriptive Classifications of Intelligence Quotients

IQ Description % of Population
130+ Very superior 2.2%
120-129 Superior 6.7%
110-119 High average 16.1%
90-109 Average 50%
80-89 Low average 16.1%
70-79 Borderline 6.7%
-70 Extremely low 2.2%

IQ scores can be affected by nutrition and family environment. IQ levels can affect earnings, but a study conducted in 2002 (Bowles, Samuel; Gintis, Herbert, Journal of Economic Perspectives) found that a person's location, race, schooling and inherited wealth have more to do with income than IQ scores.
