IRS

The IRS stands for Internal Revenue Service. It is responsible for collecting taxes and revenue for the US federal government. The IRS is a part of the Department of the Treasury.

About IRS

The IRS was originally created created in 1862, under the Revenue Act of 1862, to pay for the Civil War. The creation helped fund and pay for the war, by taxing income. By 1872, Congress allowed the tax to expire. However, progressives demanded for an income tax to pay for government services. In 1913, the Sixteenth Amendment, allowing congress to tax based on income, was ratified to the US Constitution. The IRS was recreated in 1913.

Today, the IRS collects taxes from ten different centers across the country. These centers process different tax returns, such as corporate or individual.
