Israel

Israel

The State of Israel is a Middle Eastern nation on the east side of the Mediterranean Sea, bordering Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. It is the only majority Jewish country in the world.

About Israel

The nation of Israel traces its origins back to ancient history, to the biblical homeland of the Hebrew people. At the beginning of the 20th century, diplomatic efforts were used to create a new homeland for Jewish people in the existing state of Palestine. After World War II and the Jewish Holocaust, the modern State of Israel declared itself in 1948 and soon after began a series of skirmishes, battles, and occasional war with its neighboring nations. As a Jewish nation, surrounded by Islamic nations, and occupying land claimed by Muslims, Israel has been a frequent target for violence.

Israel is a democracy, led by a prime minister, and the Knesset, which is the legislative branch. While Israel is mostly Jewish, there are over a million non-Jewish Israeli citizens, mostly Arabs of Muslim or Christian background.

The state of Israel has a difficult relationship with its neighbor nations and the United Nations.

While Israel has occupied foreign territory through war, it is also a near constant target for artillery fire from other nations. While it has to deal with a long and violent history of abuse, discrimination and anti-Semitism against Jews, Israel is currently keeping many non-Jewish citizens in a situation sometimes compared to the apartheid system once used in South Africa.

Israel is a key U.S. ally in the Middle East. It is a nation that embodies both ancient traditions and high technology, and welcomes people of Jewish faith from all over the world as their homeland.
