About J K Rowling

Known for: Being the Author of Harry Potter Book Series

J. K. Rowling is a famous English author who is best known for her Harry Potter books. It took her 6 years to write the first Harry Potter book. When Joanne went to have the book published they asked her to use initials because a female author may deter boys from reading the book. She chose J.K. Rowling. K is for Kathleen in honor of her grandmother. Her Harry Potter book series have gone on to sell over 400 Million copies. They have also been made into several phenomenally successful movies.

Growing up, Joanne often wrote fantasy stories that she would read to her sister Dianne. She always wanted to be an author. The idea of Harry Potter and his friends came to her on a delayed train trip from Manchester to London in 1990. She immediately started writing. Soon after she began, her mother lost her battle with MS that same year. This affected her writing by giving Harry deeper feelings about the deaths of his parents.

By 1992, Joanne had married Jorge Arantes, a Portuguese Journalist. They had one daughter together, Jessica Isabel Rowling Arantes, in 1993. Three months after her birth Joanne left her husband and moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. During this time Joanne was struggling with clinical depression and contemplating suicide. This illness gave her the idea of the Dementors.

Once she decided she wanted to be a teacher in Scotland, she knew she had to finish the Harry Potter book or it would never be done. She finally finished it in 1995. It was published a year later by Bloomsbury. The rest is Harry Potter History!

J. K. Rowling is now an award winning author. She is listed as a billionaire by Forbes. It only took her five years to go from rags to riches! She remarried in 2002 to Neil Murray. They have two children together, David Gordon Rowling Murray and Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray.
