J. Crew was founded as Popular Merchandise by Mitchell Cinader and Saul Charles in 1947. Popular Merchandise, a company that aimed to sell affordable women's clothing, became known as J. Crew in 1989, the same year the first J. Crew store was opened. J. Crew now operates about 250 stores across the country and numerous stores across the globe. J. Crew has maintained a classic, fairly preppy style, modeled after the designs of Ralph Lauren.
