ABOUT JAMIE FOXX

Jamie Foxx is an American entertainer who has achieved success as a comedian, television and movie actor, and as a musician. Foxx was born Eric Bishop and raised in Terrell, Texas where he played basketball and football for Terrell High School. He excelled in athletics, and became a record-setting quarterback at Terrell High School, the first QB at the school to pass for more than 1,000 yards. Aside from being a skilled athlete, though, Foxx was also a talented and involved musician, playing piano from an early age and singing. This passion for music led to Foxx being awarded a scholarship and studying classical music and composition at the United States International University. In 1989 Foxx, on a dare from a girlfriend, did a stand-up act at a comedy club. For the next two years Foxx performed comedy under the stage name Jamie Foxx. Why the name change? He chose the name Jamie after he noticed that men were usually called second after women to perform on stage. Jamie, like Alex and others, is a unisex name which could get around that bias. The last name Foxx was in chosen in honor of comedian Redd Foxx. From music to stand-up, in 1991 Foxx transitioned into another opportunity, this time as an actor on television. Foxx's first appearance was on the Wayans brother's sketch comedy ‘In Living Color’ (1990), followed by the FOX sitcom ‘Roc’ (1991). After small roles in several movies and TV shows, in 1996 Foxx got his biggest break starring in his own sitcom, ‘The Jamie Foxx Show’. The series ran from 1996 to 2001 on the WB network, made his name known nationally, and also won Foxx an Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. In 1992, Foxx made his film debut in the Robin Williams comedy 'Toys', and appeared in five other movies before landing his first major dramatic role in the professional football drama ‘Any Given Sunday' (1999). Foxx followed 'Any Given Sunday' with starring roles in 'Bait' (2000), 'Ali' (2001), and 'Shade' (2003). It was 2004, however, which set Foxx apart as one of the top-tier actors in Hollywood when he was nominated for an Academy Award for ‘Collateral' (2004) and won the Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying soul musician Ray Charles in the movie ‘Ray' (2004). Other Jamie Foxx movies to check out include ‘Miami Vice' (2006), ‘Dreamgirls' (2006), 'The Kingdom' (2007), ‘The Soloist' (2009), 'Law Abiding Citizen' (2009), and ‘Due Date' (2010). Foxx is also a successful recording artist and record producer, contributing to several Billboard #1 hits including Kanye West's "Gold Digger". In 2010, Jamie Foxx added Grammy Award-winner to his list of achievements for the hit single "Blame It" featuring T-Pain. To date, Foxx has released four albums: 'Peep This' (1994), 'Unpredictable' (2005), 'Intuition' (2008), and 'Body' (December 14, 2010). Clearly, Jamie Foxx is one of the most successful and all-around talented entertainers of his generation. If winning a Grammy Award, American Music Award, Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and numerous other honors in music, television, and movies does not prove how all-around talented he is, what does?
