Jay-Z is widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, and he is known for his rhyming prowess and colossal ego. Born with the name Shawn Carter and raised in Brooklyn, he was abandoned by his father and claims in one of his songs that he shot his brother in the shoulder at the age of 12 for stealing his jewelry. He began free-styling and writing lyrics at a young age, and he became known as ‘Jazzy’ - a nickname that would evolve into his stage name, Jay-Z. After being unable to score a record deal with a label, Jay-Z co-founded independent label Roc-A-Fella Records. His debut album was 1996’s ‘Reasonable Doubt,’ which became a hip-hop classic and launched Jay-Z to stardom. He now has 3 albums in total that are included in lists of the greatest rap albums of all time, and he is an accomplished record producer and entrepreneur. Jay-Z may have 99 problems, but his wife ain’t one - the lucky man gets come home to Beyoncé every night.

He has sold approximately 50 million albums worldwide, while receiving fourteen Grammy Awards for his musical work, and numerous additional nominations. He is consistently ranked as one of the greatest rappers of all-time. He was ranked #1 by MTV in their list of The Greatest MCs of All-Time in 2006. Two of his albums, Reasonable Doubt (1996) and The Blueprint (2001) are considered landmarks in the genre with both of them being ranked in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Blender included the former on their 500 CDs You Must Own Before You Die.
