Jesus

In the Christian faith, Jesus is the Son of God, and believers say that he came to Earth to live as a man, and suffered and died for our sins.

About Jesus

Jesus is central to the Christian faith. According to scripture, He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies foretelling the coming of a Messiah. According to scripture, Mary was selected by God to give birth to Jesus, and many Christians around the world traditionally celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25th.

The Bible gives us the details of his birth in the books of Matthew and Luke. The other two gospels, Mark and John, start differently. Mark gives a picture of the beginning of His ministry that is introduced by Jesus's cousin, John the Baptist. John takes the Jesus story even further back, and points out that Jesus was always there as the Word, with the Father, creating everything. Many of the gospels were actually written years after the death of Jesus, so there are various interpretations of his life in each book of the Bible in the New Testament.

Jesus is known by many names in the Bible. As many as 700 different references and names have been attributed to Jesus. Some of these are Lord, Lamb of God, Messiah, Alpha and Omega, Light of the Word, Bread of Life, Savior, and Redeemer. Each of these names describes different aspects of Jesus's character or purpose. Many of these references are also found in the prophecies in the Old Testament.

According to the Christian faith, Jesus's main purpose was to come to Earth and be the final sacrifice for mankind's sins. This faith is summed up for the following verse from the Book of John in the New Testament: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16 KJV). Christians believe that through Jesus's death, burial and resurrection, which is celebrated at Easter, his purpose was fulfilled.
