John F. Kennedy Jr. was the 35th President of the United States. He was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald. His presidency corresponded with a national mood of optimism, and a time when a new generation took leadership from the hands of the World War II generation.

About John Kennedy

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29,1917, the second of nine children. He studied at Harvard Law School, and traveled extensively while in college. Upon graduation, he wrote Why England Slept, a bestseller.

After graduation he entered the Navy; he had applied to the Army but chronic back pain hindered his entry. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal after he led his patrol boat seaman to safety after being rammed by a Japanese destroyer.

Kennedy ran for Congress in 1946, securing a seat. In 1952, he ran and won a Senate seat in Massachusetts. During his time in the Senate, Kennedy published 'Profiles in Courage,' earning him a Pulitzer Prize.

Kennedy ran for and won Presidential office in 1960. During his time in Presidency he faced the Bay of Pigs invasion, the construction of the Berlin Wall, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He founded the Peace Corps, pushed NASA, and a supporter of Civil Rights. He is credited for the emphasis on science that resulted in putting the first man on the moon.

Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, at 12:30 pm on November 22, 1963. He died at the hospital at 1:00pm. The assassin was Lee Harvey Oswald. His funeral was held on November 25, 1963 and he is buried in the Arlington National Cemetery.
