Kansas

Kansas is a state in the Midwestern United States bordered by Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado. The state has three climatic regions. The eastern and central portion of the state have a humid continental climate while the western part has a semiarid steppe climate. Temperatures are usually very hot in the summer with low humidity with warm and sometimes very cold winters.

About Kansas

In 1541 Francisco Vásquez de Coronado was the first to explore the area which is now Kansas. The United States secured the majority of Kansas in the Louisiana purchase except southwest Kansas which was part of Spain, Mexico, and the Republic of Texas until the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848. Kansas was admitted to the union on January 29, 1861 as the 34th state with a land area of 82,277 sq miles.

Topeka, Kansas is the state capital with Wichita being the largest city. Kansas is also known as the Sunflower State. The state bird is the western meadowlark, the state flower is the sunflower, and the state tree is the cottonwood. The Kansas state motto is To the stars through difficulties’ (Ad astra per aspera).

Kansas offers much more than tornado's and fields. The whole family will enjoy a trip across this fun state. In Wichita, Kansas a stop at the Sedgwick County Zoo will provide hours of animal fun. The Wichita Art Museum features works of art from American painters, potters, sculptors, and textile weavers. In Topeka take a walk back in history at the Brown vs. Board of Education National Historical Site.

This site is the former Monroe Elementary School which was one of the segregated schools involved in the 1954 Supreme Court decision aimed at ending segregation in public schools. Fly high at the Combat Air Museum which features a collection of military aircraft, a re-created German P.O.W. barracks, aircraft engines and aviation memorabilia.
