Kathryn Bigelow is an Oscar-winning director and filmmaker. She is most famous for directing the Oscar-winning Best Picture 'The Hurt Locker,' for which she also became the first woman ever to win the Academy Award for Best Director.

Filmmaker and director Kathryn Bigelow was born in San Carlos, California. Initially interesting in painting, Bigelow studied fine arts at the San Francisco Art Institute. However, she enrolled in Columbia University's graduate film program where she studied theory, criticism, and later gained experience teaching at the California Institute of the Arts.

Bigelow's first feature-length film, a biker movie titled 'The Loveless,' starring actor Willem Dafoe in his first starring role, debuted in 1982. She then directed the cult horror hit 'Near Dark' (1987), the surfer action crime picture 'Point Break' (1991), the historical mystery 'The Weight of Water' (2000), and the Oscar-winning war drama 'The Hurt Locker' (2008) which drove her career to new heights.

For 'The Hurt Locker,' starring Jeremy Renner, Bigelow became the first woman ever to win the Oscar for Best Director. She also won Best Motion Picture for 'The Hurt Locker,' as well, beating James Cameron's 'Avatar.' She was also awarded the Directors Guild of America award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Picture, and the picture also won her the awards for Best Film and Best Director at the 2010 British Academy Film Awards, as well as a Golden Globe nomination.

Leading up to the 2010 Oscars, the media tried to stir up interest in a face-off between Bigelow and her ex-husband, James Cameron, who was also nominated for Best Director for his ground-breaking film, 'Avatar.' But both directors insisted that they were colleagues who respected each other's work and mentored each other. Bigelow and Cameron were married to each other from 1989 through 1991.
