Kentucky is a state located in the East Central United States of America. As classified by the United States Census Bureau, Kentucky is a Southern state. Kentucky is one of four U.S. states constituted as a commonwealth (the others being Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts).

About Kentucky

Kentucky is known as the Bluegrass State, a nickname based on the fact that native bluegrass is present in many of the pastures throughout the state, based on the fertile soil. Kentucky borders seven states, from the Midwest and the Southeast. West Virginia lies to the east, Virginia to the southeast, Tennessee to the south, Missouri to the west, Illinois and Indiana to the northwest, and Ohio to the north and northeast.

Kentucky has a climate that can best be described as a humid subtropical climate. The monthly average temperatures in Kentucky range from a summer daytime high of 87 °F (31 °C) to a winter low of 23 °F (-5 °C). The average precipitation is 46 inches (1,200 mm) a year.

In Kentucky, you can travel through soft rolling hills of Horse Country and visit the Kentucky Horse Park for an intimate experience with past Kentucky Derby winners. You can also tour the Kentucky Bourbon distilleries. Make sure to tour the state’s wine country too. If sports are your thing, you could stop by some sports attractions such as the Muhammad Ali Center and Louisville Slugger Museum. Or just spend the day doing some upscale shopping, enjoying fine dining and visiting the many art galleries. There are lots of things to do and see in Kentucky.

Frankfort became the capital in 1792 after pledging more manpower toward the construction of a statehouse than any other city. During the Civil War, Frankfort was the only Union capital occupied by Confederate troops. The largest industry groups, based on their contribution to the total state gross product are: manufacturing, services, government, insurance and real estate, retail trade, transportation and public utilities, wholesale trade, construction, mining, farming and agricultural services, forestry, and fisheries. Kentucky’s state motto is United We Stand, Divided We Fall, and was adopted 1942. The state bird is the cardinal, the state horse is the Thoroughbred, the state fruit is the blackberry, and the state tree is the Tulip Poplar.
