Kittens

Kittens

Kittens are baby cats. They are cute, get into trouble, and keep their eyes closed for the first week of their lives. They need constant care, as during the first several weeks of their lives they are unable to urinate or defecate without stimulation from their mothers.

About Kittens

Any feline under the age of 6 months is technically called a kitten. When you bring a kitten home for the first time, you need to make sure that you have the right supplies.

Here is a list of some of the items that you will need:

A cat carrier (to transport your new kitten home and to transport it to its vet appointments), litter box, litter, litter scoop, water dish, food dish, food made specifically for kittens (you will need to decide what kind of food you are going to feed your kitten, whether it be dry cat food or canned cat food), cat bed (some cats like them and some cats won’t even bother to look at them), a collar, scratching post, toys, grooming supplies and a book on cat health care.

Make an appointment for your kitten's first exam prior to actually getting the kitten. Between nine and twelve weeks of age, kittens lose the disease protection that they had received from their mothers and develop the ability to form their own immunity. This is the best time to start vaccinations.

A lot of people like to give their kitten age-appropriate dry kitten food in addition to canned kitten food. The dry food helps to keep their teeth clean and healthy. Adult cats do better on the canned food because it helps to keep them from having urinary tract infections later in life. Do not give milk to kittens. They don't need it and milk is likely to give them diarrhea.

You will need to decide if your kitten will become an indoor cat or an outdoor cat. Kittens should be kept inside until they are at least three or four months old. The world outside is not safe for a kitten. If you decide to allow your kitten outside, make sure to do it gradually and with close supervision for the first couple of times. Kittens seldom get lost and prefer to remain close by.
