Lion

Lion

The lion is a beautiful and terrifying creature that has been mythologized even as it becomes more endangered. The lion's roar and mane are two of the most characteristic features that distinguish it from other animals.

About Lion

Lions are members of the Felidae, the biological family of the cats. Felidae are divided into two subcategories, with lions belonging to the Pantherinae family. Other members of the Panterinae family include tigers, jaguars and leopards.

Characteristics

One of the most recognizable characteristics about a lion is its mane. The mane is comprised of long, thick hair that surrounds the head and neck area. The mane gives the lion the appearance of being larger and stronger. This helps the lion in protecting his pride. It also helps protect the lion from injury during fights. Scientists also believe that the coloring of the mane is related to the health of the animal and possibly indicating strong reproductive abilities.

Family Structure of the Lion
Occasionally lions will live on their own or in pairs. The lions are called nomads. Most often a nomad is a male who has been excluded from his family group. Male cubs are forced out of their prides to start their own life once they reach maturity.

Location of Lion Population

The largest population of lions is found in Africa, but their numbers are decreasing. Scientists are unsure as to the cause of the population drop, but it is most likely due to loss of habitat. Lions are also found in Asia. They used to roam freely across Persia, India, Palestine and Turkey but over time their numbers decreased so much that it was thought the species would become extinct. Today Asian lions can be found in a protected area called Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in the state of Gujarat in India.
