Live Green

Live Green

Living green has turned into a buzz-word in the last few years, but that doesn't make it any less important. Waiting on world governments to pass some legislation that will fix the environment is like waiting for zombie Abe Lincoln to start running amok and create a zombie Stephen Hawking. It's not going to happen any time soon. Attitudes change one at a time, and taking little steps like recycling or planting a garden can make all the difference in the world.

About Live Green

To help you pick up a greener lifestyle, we came up with a few easy tips that will make environmental consciousness seem like second nature.

Transportation - We have to move around our environment, but we don't have to do it at the expense of our resources. The easiest thing to do is walk more. Instead of driving down to the corner store to get a soda, try walking. A little exercise won't kill you, and the more miles you put on your shoes, the fewer miles you're putting on your car.

If you live too far from work/school to walk, there are plenty of other options that will save both money and the environment. Try commuting by bike, it not only keeps you looking good, it has almost zero impact on the environment. If bikes aren't an option, try public transport like trains and busses. Car-pooling can also be a great way for everyone to save some cash and drop a few more cars from the roads, all while lowering your carbon footprint. Plus you get to drive in those sweet HOV lanes.

Food - Buying local goods like produce, meat and beer are not only good for your community, but they lower your carbon foot print by reducing the shipping exponentially. Shipping something across town uses way less fuel and creates a lot less exhaust than hauling food across the country.

Yes, PETA can be extremely obnoxious, but they're right about how going vegan/vegetarian can have a huge environmental impact. Massive herds of cows produce clouds of methane over lakes of fecal waste, which not only turns air quality to bull crap. The smell is really difficult to live near, and all that methane contributes to global warming. The poo pit underneath the cows can seep into ground water or run off into streams. Gross.

Energy - Saving energy is easy, and it saves you cash. Turn out the lights when you leave a room. Unplug devices that are in use. Change your lightbulbs from incandescent to energy-saving LEDs or fluorescent lights. Add some solar panels to your roof. If you create enough energy, you can usually sell it back to the electric company, which lowers your bill. Change your windows, put seals around your doors, change your air conditioner, change your appliances. The list goes on forever.
